Location
The Kingha Collective is a project initiated by Kingsley Griffin, the founder of Kingha Estate, a coffee farm in western Uganda. The coffee comes from smallholder farmers living along a mountain ridge near the town of Nyakshenyi, close to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The forest is a national reserve for gorillas.
Die Kleinbauern, mit denen Kingsley zusammenarbeitet, haben in der Regel nicht mehr als 2 ha Land. Es handelt sich um ein recht abgelegenes Gebiet mit begrenztem Zugang.
About
The project is based on agricultural consulting aimed at improving income and enhancing quality through changes in processing methods. Farmers are trained to achieve higher yields and better quality, which is ultimately intended to increase their income. In addition, the Kingha project provides clothing and school supplies to nearby schools and offers agricultural education programs for the communities.
Kingha has become one of the largest employers in the area. The project places great importance on sustainability, avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on its land. 95% of its electricity is generated through solar panels.
A major project is a micro-hydropower plant at the foot of the Kingha settlement, where part of the Entenjari River flows through. This facility will provide a steady source of renewable energy, sufficient to power the local health center, two primary schools, a secondary school, and meet the site's electricity needs. All the electricity generated will be provided to the local community free of charge.
